Q:

What is an IP address?

A:

Every computer that can access the Internet is associated with a unique numerical value known as its Internet Protocol (IP) address. The format of an IP address is four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. For example, 135.2.243.16 could be an IP address. The InterNIC Registration Service assigns Internet addresses.

When specifying IP addresses for STN Easy and STN Easy for Intranets IP Address Authorization, you may specify an exact IP address (such as 135.2.243.15), or you may use an asterisk to indicate all of the values 0-255. For example, 135.2.243.* refers to all IP addresses starting with 135.2.243 and 135.2.*.* means all IP addresses starting 135.2.

Q:

What is different between accessing STN Easy and STN Easy for Intranets via IP address authorization versus the standard?

A:

There are several differences. With IP Address Authorization:
  1. Users do not need to enter a Login ID and password.
  2. Many people from one IP address can all access STN Easy and STN Easy for Intranets at the same time.
  3. You will be taken to a slightly different home page where you simply press the "Start Your Session" button.
  4. An Account/Site Administrator must be designated.
  5. Default preferences will be standardized and maintained by the Account/Site Administrator.
  6. To protect the privacy of individual users (who cannot be identified when using IP Address Authorization), session transcripts will not be available.
  7. The session is automatically set up as a secure session (encryption).
  8. Anyone accessing STN Easy through a public Internet Service Provider (such as AOL, MSN, etc.) cannot be set up for IP Address Authorization because we cannot identify their computer adequately.
  9. Academic accounts must choose to access either the academic version of STN Easy or the standard version for each IP address that is set up for automatic authorization. One IP address cannot access both versions of STN Easy.
